“As we make our arrangements, we must focus on the flowers. We become calm, relaxed and gain a sense of beauty.”

About Mrs. Tanaka
Tomoko Tanaka began her journey in ikebana at the age of fourteen in her native Japan, immersing herself in the transformative art of the Sogetsu School. Today, she holds the prestigious certificate of Riji—the highest rank awarded by the Sogetsu School—representing decades of dedication and mastery.
As Former Director of the Sogetsu Massachusetts Branch and having served three times as President of Ikebana International Boston Chapter, Tomoko has become a pillar of the ikebana community throughout New England. Her arrangements have graced museums, hotels, and ikebana conferences across the United States and Japan.
Tomoko’s teaching philosophy centers on the fundamental elements of line, mass, and color, guiding students to bring the charm and beauty of nature to life through their arrangements. She has introduced ikebana to national audiences through her appearance on PBS’s “The Victory Garden” and continues to share her expertise through demonstrations and workshops. In 2017, Tomoko received the Akane Teshigahara (Headmistress) Award for her contributions and achievements to Sogetsu at the 90th anniversary celebrations in Tokyo Japan.
